Medicaid Considerations

In order to be eligible for Medicaid, there are a number of federal and state regulations which you must comply with.  For example, an individual applying for Medicaid is allowed no more than $2,000 in countable assets.  Please see the information below to help determine what is and is not a countable asset.  Furthermore, if the individual is legally married at the time of application, there are asset limits which are imposed upon the spouse as well.  These limits vary widely depending upon the total joint-asset amount, and you will receive assistance with these calculations from a social worker during the application process.  Our funeral home staff is also very knowledgeable about Medicaid and other aid programs, and can help get you in touch with the County or State for additional assistance if necessary.  As you will read below, dedicated funds irrevocably assigned to the funeral home are not countable assets.  Of course, there is never a cost or obligation to call on us for information.  If you prefer, we can also meet you at your home or other location of your choosing.

Countable Assets

Examples of countable assets may include, but are not limited to:

  • Cash
  • Checking Accounts
  • Savings Accounts
  • Life Insurance Policies not assigned to a funeral home
  • Certificates of Deposit

Assets Not Counted

Medicaid does not count some assets. Those not counted include:

  • Your home (as long as the community spouse or other dependent relative lives there).
  • One vehicle.
  • Burial assets (including insurance, trust funds, and plots).
  • Household furnishings.
  • Clothing and other personal items.

Reducing Assets to the Allowable Limit

"Excess" assets (assets which are above the asset limit) can be reduced to allowable limits if they are used to pay for nursing home or home care costs, or for other things such as home repairs or improvements, vehicle repair or replacement, clothing or other household expenses. If excess assets are not reduced, the institutionalized spouse cannot be enrolled in Medicaid.
