James H (Marty) Martin, aged 81, passed away Friday, November 17, 2023, at the Unity Hospice Meng Center in De Pere, WI. He was born on June 5, 1942, in Marlin, TX. He graduated from Chilton High School in Chilton, TX, attended 1 year at Southwest Texas State College in San Marcos, TX studying Industrial Arts Education, and went to night school for 7 years at the Milwaukee School of Engineering in Milwaukee, WI studying Electrical Engineering.
He served in the US Navy from 1961-1967 as a submariner on the USS Gudgeon (SS-567) and USS Spinax (SS-489) diesel submarines as an electrical technician which were stationed at Pearl Harbor, HI.
He met his wife Kathleen Herr on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, HI in 1965. They were married in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenwood, WI on August 17, 1968, and recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.
He worked for the Harnischfeger Corporation between 1968 and 1983 in Milwaukee, WI, and Escanaba, MI as an electrical test technician and electrical designer. After moving to Green Bay in 1983, he worked for the Bemis Company, Tec Systems, and Superior Engineering as an electrical designer.
He had many hobbies which included sailing his 17-foot O’Day Day Sailer, building black powder rifles, collecting beer mugs, woodworking, and attending Learning in Retirement classes at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. He also loved traveling on small cruise ships.
He is survived by his wife Kathleen, his son William (Diane), daughter Sara (Andrew); grandchildren Abigail, Katherine, William, and Gwendolyn, and brother-in-law Paul James, twin nieces Sharon (Ryan) Drake and Sheila (David) Bean, and other nieces and nephews.
James is preceded in death by his father Albert (1989), mother Mary (2010), sister Linda (2011), and many aunts and uncles.
The visitation will be held at Resurrection Catholic Church, 333 Hilltop Dr., Green Bay, on Friday, November 24, 2023, from 9:00 until 10:45 AM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM with Father Tom Reynebeau officiating. Burial will follow at the Allouez Catholic Cemetery.
