George L. Schuelke

George L. Schuelke, 88, De Pere, passed away Monday, August 19, 2013 at a local hospital. He was born November 15, 1924 in Kingsford, MI, son of the late George H. and Augusta Marion (Radloff) Schuelke. George graduated from Kingsford High School in June of 1942 and went on to attend Emergency War Vocational Training in Iron Mountain. After serving his country in the United States Army, he attended Ferris Institute in Big Rapids, MI and then attended Lawrence Institute of Technology, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1951. After graduating, George was an Engineer-in-Training for Nordberg Mfg. Co. in Milwaukee, WI and then as a Mechanical Engineer for Kimberly Clark in Neenah, WI. On July 1, 1960 he was hired by FMC Corp.-Hudson Sharp, Green Bay, as a Mechanical Design Engineer in the Paper Mill Division and retired from there in 1988. George married Madonna (“Donna”) Marie Jacques on February 27, 1954 at St. Phillips Catholic Church in Green Bay. During their 48 years of marriage, they had 3 children and 4 grandchildren. Donna preceded him in death on February 13, 2003, two weeks shy of their 49th wedding anniversary. George was a soft-spoken, thoughtful, intelligent man with a friendly smile. He enjoyed golfing, camping and their semi-annual trips to Bella Vista, Arkansas. At the age of 50, he began jogging and continued into his 70’s. He was a member of the Campers Club, the Whirl-A-Way Square Dance Club and was both a member and president of the FMC Golf League. He honorably served his country in the United States Army during WWII in the 91st Infantry Division from 1943 to 1945, which included a combat tour in Italy. He was a decorated veteran and received many awards, including the Distinguished Unit Citation and the Bronze Star. This made a significant impact throughout his life. Years later, he was able to vacation in Italy with Donna and 2 of his good army buddies and their wives. He also enjoyed attending the 91st Infantry Division reunions that were held across the country. His military memberships included the American Legion and VFW. Survivors include his three children and families, Mary Beth and Kevin Joyce, Green Bay; Maureen Schuelke, Maple Park, IL; Kevin and Laura Schuelke, Stewartstown, PA. His grandchildren include Angela Palazzetti (Tyler Fox), Abby Joyce, Eric Schuelke and Tyler Schuelke. Other survivors include his sister, Virginia Stevenson; sisters- and brothers-in-law: Doris and Bud Hedstrom, Donna Jacques, Audrey Cappelle, Don Jacques; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, George was preceded in death by his brother, Fred Schuelke; sister-in-law, Diane Schuelke; brother-in-law, Bob Stevenson and nephew, Jeff Schuelke. Donna’s relatives who preceded him in death were: Orville and Lillian Jacques, Orville Jacques, Jr., Kathleen Jacques, Beverly Jacques, Al Cappelle, Ken Jacques, Laurie Oettinger, Lynnette (Jacques) Atkins, Bonnie Oettinger, Paul Knoke, George Lentz and Nick Price. Visitation will be Friday, August 23, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of Mass at 11:00 a.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church, 333 Hilltop Drive, Allouez, with Bishop Robert Morneau officiating. Interment will be in Allouez Catholic Cemetery. Cotter Funeral Home, De Pere, is assisting the family. Online condolences may be expressed at www.cotterfuneralhome.com. The family would like to offer a special thank you to the very caring staffs at the St. Vincent Emergency Room and Critical Care Unit during his stay there. In addition, we cannot put into words how much Dad appreciated his favorite doctor, Dr. Tracy Sherman. Her true kindness and professionalism brought him great comfort. And finally, we must thank the 500 wing staff at Rennes Health Center for their daily compassionate care over the last 2 years. His final years were better because of you.
