Stephen Vickers Somerville

Dr. Stephen V. Somerville, 71, neurologist and Green Bay native, died in his Bellevue home on Monday morning, February 20, 2017 surrounded by friends and family. Steve was born in 1945 and graduated from East High School in 1963. He graduated from UW-Madison in 1967, where he also attended medical school. He spent the early 1970s in New York City, where he completed a Neurology internship at Mt. Sinai Hospital under the tutelage of the esteemed neuroscientist Dr. Morris Bender. Steve returned to Green Bay in 1975 and practiced neurology in the community for over 30 years. During the 1980s, he realized the importance of a new diagnostic tool, magnetic resonance imaging, and developed the first MRI center in Northeast Wisconsin. He acted as director of NEW MRI for 10 years during its successful operation. He was passionate about neurology, medicine, and the human mind, and is remembered with gratitude by the thousands of patients he helped over the years. Steve had countless hobbies and interests, and remained zealous about them in his retirement years. He enjoyed astronomy, bird-watching, golf, gardening, growing giant pumpkins, yelling at the Packers, walking his beloved dogs, photography, fly-fishing, carpentry, crashing drones into Lake Michigan, collecting an unreasonable amount of flashlights, and sudden, unsolicited acts of shocking generosity. Nothing pleased him more than get-togethers with old friends— except maybe meeting new ones down at The Rite Place. He is survived by his two children (Sara Prohaska, and Patrick Somerville), his daughter in-law (Alexis Jaeger) two brothers (Jack Somerville and Joel Somerville), his former wife (Lee Somerville), and his three grandsons—Owen, Leo, and Pete—who got to know him just enough to remember him forever.
